Highlights of the Cordillera Blanca. The highest tropical mountain range in the world, the Cordillera Blanca is part of the spectacular Andes that form the spine of South America. A mecca for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, the region boasts over 50 peaks that exceed 15,000 feet, 700 glaciers and 300 lakes.
Trekking to Laguna Churup: With private vehicule we head towards Pitec ,check point of Huscaran National Park; after we start our trek by ascenting a zigzag trail to laguna ; we scramble small boulder; after short stop we reach laguna Churup; we relax, take plenty of photos and descent same route approx.2h to Pitec where our transport to huaraz awaits us.
Laguna Churup is located 20 km east from Huaraz on the way to Llupa and Pitec; one of the most beautifull and popular to visit. From Pitec you have to hike approx. 2-3h ( 3,5 km) to reach this turquiose lake. The trek to Lake Churup is very popular and close to Huaraz but is not so easy to evoke . For that reason leaving early is the best option. You can enoy your own pace and rest when you need to; another option in camping on the shore of the lake when you have time and all necessary aquipment.
Day 1: Huaraz (3100 m) - Privat transport to Pitec (3850 m) - Trekking Hike to Laguna Churup (4450 m)
The trail to Laguna Churup is one of the classic hikes of the Cordillera Blanca, challenging but a great acclimatization route. We drive to the village of Llupa, and from there begin our hike on an ancient Inca trail to Laguna (Lake) Churup. The trail gets narrow and steep, including a small section with fixed ropes. It‘s one of the most beautiful places in this varied mountain region. Churup Peak rises above the lake, a wild rocky mountain with glaciers and cliffs 5,400 meters above sea level. Here we can continue climbing and do a loop to the Churup summit trail before returning to the trailhead and back to Huaraz for the night.

Culture Chavin de Huantar: Located in the Peruvian Andes, Chavín de Huántar was the strategic capital and religious center of the pre-Inca, Chavín civilization. The project team from the University of California at Berkeley traveled to Chavín to digitally preserve this important site. The project’s goal was to support and supplement archaeological activities and research being conducted by Stanford University with the intent of the new data becoming the foundation for an on-site conservation plan.
Chavín de Huántar: The archaeological site of Chavín de Huántar sits at an elevation of 3,180m (10,425ft) above sea level in the Peruvian Andes and is located at the confluence of the Mosna and Wacheksa rivers. Chavín once intersected several major trade routes through the Cordillera Blanca mountain range, a strategic location for the capital of the Chavín civilization. The site is located near the Callejón de Huáyla Valley where the village of Chavín de Huántar is located. Chavín is now served by a recently-upgraded, asphalt roadway. Covering 12,000 sq m (129,167 sq ft), the site includes massive temple structures with significant interior and subterranean space, pyramidal platforms, courts, and sunken plaza spaces, most of which are aligned on a common axis. Over time, river floods have eroded much of this stone architecture; its mountainous location has also made it susceptible to destructive landslides (as recent as 1945) and earthquakes (as recent as 1970) over the centuries.
History: Chavín de Huántar was a ceremonial center of the Chavín, a pre-Inca culture. The center was situated at an unparalleled crossroads between the mountains, the jungle, and the sea; the influence of all these environments likely had a strong effect on their culture and iconography, as well as their economy. It was first inhabited around 1500 BCE, during the Initial Period; during this period, the Old Temple was constructed which was a U-shaped temple and platform, encompassing the Circular Plaza. This temple contained several subterranean galleries used for religious rites, storage and possibly living space for groups involved in rituals at the temple. The Lanzón Gallery was housed in the heart of the Old Temple. The site’s most illustrious era was during the Chavín Horizon (800 – 300 BCE). Similar belief systems and rituals were carried out during this new era, but the entire center was enlarged with new constructions. The site of the Old Temple was expanded to include the New Temple, which also had galleries and plaza spaces. The Old Temple is believed to have still functioned after the completion of the New Temple. Social instability and upheaval at Chavín de Huántar occurred between 500 and 300 BCE, the same time that the Chavín civilization began to decline. Sometime after its abandonment, a small village occupied the Circular Plaza and some temples were salvaged for building materials.
Project Narrative: In July 2005, a group of students from the University of California, Berkeley traveled to Chavín de Huántar in Ancash, Peru for an archaeological 3D laser scan documentation project. The project’s goal was to support and supplement the archaeological activities and research being conducted at the site by Stanford University. The intent was the new data would become the base data set for executing a conservation plan for the site. The students implemented HDS, panoramic photography, HR photography, traditional survey, time-lapse photography, and close-range 3D scanning. The subject of the project was all above-ground structures and selected subterranean galleries. The venture was funded jointly by Stanford University and the Kacyra Family Foundation.
Preservation: Chavín’s state of preservation is poor, but gradually improving. In 1998, Peru’s National Institute for Culture (INC) asked for emergency assistance to stabilize and protect the site from the upcoming El Niño weather pattern. During the assistance, which improved drainage and stabilized the galleries, it was noted that the site had never been subject to a specific conservation or preservation effort and the state of conservation of the major structures was extremely poor as a result of climate, structural instability, topography, the materials used in construction, and badly managed tourism. A new access road was recently constructed, but before construction began, Stanford University performed excavations of the location known as “La Banda” in order to secure any archaeological remains and help assure the damage done by the road is minimal. UNESCO has urged Peru to develop a site management plan. The new Chavín Conservation Partnership (CCP) is developing plans to protect the site from excessive tourism due to the construction of a highway to the remote, mountain-top area. The CCP trained a new conservation team in 2004/2005 and the team has begun working on the preparation of 600-800 artifacts for consolidation, conservation, cataloguing, and interpretation. Artifacts are also being prepared from the collections in the site museum and Lima’s National Museum for the new National Museum of Chavín, slated for construction in 2006. Through support and donations a conservation lab and storage facility were purchased in 2004 and the development and enforcement of a site Master Plan is underway.

A mecca for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, the region boasts over 50 peaks that exceed 15,000 feet, 700 glaciers and 300 lakes.
Trekking to Laguna 69: This lake is located in the Llanganuco Valley. The hike starts at the bottom of the Demanda Valley and takes about 3 to 4 hours. It takes about two to two and a half hours to return to the start point. On the return trip we have splendid views of snowcapped Mount Huascaran, Chopicalqui, Huandoy and Pisco, and very near we see Mount Chacraraju, and Yanapacha.
Laguna 69: Every single time you visit Cordillera Blanca ypu accounter amazing landscapes; no doubt Laguna 69 is one of the most impressive ones; also one of the easiest ones to make; no matter if its sunny or cloudy its wáters always reflect such a intense blue that reminds Carribbean; always surrounded by snowcapped mountains of Chacraraju, pisco, huando. To get there you have to hike approx 2-3h depends on your rhythm; during walk you can spot vizcachas hiding in the rocks; unfortunately Glaciar Brogui and snow from Mount Yanapaccha basically vanished ;the only remains of its existence is a touristic sign.
Day 1: Huaraz (3100 m) - Privat transport towards the valley Santa River - Village Yungay drinving via Quebrada Llanganuco - Cruze Cebollapampa (3850 m) - Trekking Hike to Laguna 69 (4650 m) - Return to Huaraz
Laguna 69 has been called the most famous and well known lake in the Cordillera Blanca. Our trail winds through picturesque montane forests and a somewhat marshy area, always alongside a steep and daunting ridge. Behind us, the fortress-like peak of the ice giant Huascarán looms. Winding trails lead us past several wild foaming waterfalls to the lake. Laguna 69 is flanked by glacial moraines. Immediately above the deep blue surface of the lake, we see the steep ice walls of Chacraraju, one of the most beautiful, but also most difficult of the 6000 peaks in the Cordillera Blanca. After rest and pictures, we return to Huaraz.

Trekking to Laguna Laguna Paron: The Laguna Paron (4200 m), 25km east of Caraz, is surrounded by spectacular snow-covered peaks, of which Pirámide de Garcilaso (5885 m), at the end of the lake, looks particularly brilliant. The challenging rock-climbing wall of Torre de Parón, known as the Sphinx , is also found here. The road to the lake goes through a canyon with 1000m-high granite walls – this drive is as spectacular as the better-known Llanganuco trip.
Fit and acclimatized hikers can trek to the lake in one long day. If you go on your own, be aware that you cannot circumnavigate the lake. The north shore is fine, but there is a very dangerous section on the south shore that is impassable due to potential falls up to 100m where the trail briefly disappears in favor of an unmarked section where slippery vegetation grows flush against the mountain surface. Two foreigners have attempted.
Day 1: Huaraz (3100 m) - Privat transport to Laguna Paron (4200 m) - Trekking Hike around Laguna Return to Huaraz
Our privat transport drove up to Carhuaz, Yungay and Caraz. From Caraz the valley below, quiet little farming town that specializes in growing berries and carnations, a small dirt road winds its way up to a beautiful lake surrounded by all those famous mountains. Laguna Paron (4200 m ) is as picturesque as it can get. Trekking around up to the aquamarine lake surrounded by snow-covered peaks is an unforgettable experience. We hiked to the end of the lake, an easy hike about 2 hours with great views of nature, after enjoy our day return to Huaraz.

The hiking circuit called “Ruta de las 4 Lagunas” is located in the Cordillera Blanca and its route begins very close to the city of Huaraz.
The hard walk that is a challenge, unites the 4 Lagoons: Ahuac, Mullaca, Carhuac and Radián; with an average unevenness of +1600 meters and more than 20 km of total route, which make this circuit one of the most difficult hikes (full day) in the Cordillera Blanca.
The average route takes around 10 to 11 hours, for which you must have a very good acclimatization and at least have proven experience on some other hiking route at more than 4,000 meters above sea level.
To carry out this circuit it is important to take a transport to the town of Willcahuain (7km from Huaraz) and it is here where the road begins, which in its first sections leads to the first lagoon called AHUAC; This first section is quite steep (+1150 meters) and with pronounced zigzags that rise abruptly in certain sectors.
1.- The Radián Lagoon: is a natural freshwater reservoir of rainwater origin located within the Huascarán National Park, in the Cordillera Blanca on the east side of the Callejón de Huaylas, within the province of Huaraz in Áncash, Peru.
2.- The Mullaca Lagoon: is a natural freshwater reservoir located within the Huascarán National Park in the department of Áncash, Peru. It is a lagoon considered dangerous by the Inaigem.
3.- Carhuac Lagoon: They are lagoons located in the Cordillera Blanca, near Huaraz; It is a strategic point to enjoy the views of the Cordillera Blanca and the valley of the Callejón de Huaylas. The surrounding landscape and the views of the Callejón de Huaylas make this route one of the most special in the Cordillera Blanca.
4.- The Ahuac or Aguak lagoon: is a natural freshwater reservoir located within the Huascarán National Park, in the Cordillera Blanca on the east side of the Callejón de Huaylas, within the province of Huaraz in Áncash, Peru. This lagoon presents clean and crystalline waters similar to a mirror of water with a blue reflection.
